9ft Pool Table Dimensions and Room Planning
Playing area and overall table size are different
A 9-foot label identifies a nominal table category, not the complete cabinet footprint. The playing area is measured between the cushion noses; the assembled table extends beyond it to include rails and the frame. Ask for the selected model’s playing area and overall dimensions separately.
For a standard 9-foot American pool reference, the WPA equipment specifications list a playing area of 100 × 50 inches (2,540 × 1,270 mm). This is an industry reference, not a measurement or certification of every table shown here. Chinese 8 ball and individual designs may use different specifications.
Allow room to use the cue
As a starting calculation, a 100 × 50-inch playing area plus a 58-inch cue on each side gives 216 × 166 inches, or 18 ft × 13 ft 10 in, of unobstructed space. This is only a geometric starting point: allow additional room for the backswing, players, seating, columns and circulation. Check the actual playing area and cue length before planning the room.
For multiple tables, plan each playing zone and the routes between them. Include door widths, stairs, lift access and the route used to bring the slate into the room.
